Art intellectual property lawyers ensure that creative work is not wrongfully taken from artists. They often advise artists, galleries, or museums on intellectual property matters and contracts, and don't litigate often. Litigation and settlement happen sometimes, but not in the majority of jobs. Art IP law jobs could be at a firm, museum, gallery, or government institution/NGO. In terms of education, there aren't necessarily schools that specialize in art IP law. However, any undergrad degree in art history/humanities subjects/government would be helpful when paired with a law school JD and potentially an MBA. Schools with such programs include UVA, NYU, Columbia, etc.

Lena Zaycman is a glass artist I found on Instagram (@hello.elena) who does a lot of stained glass, in very unconventional shapes and styles. Her style isn't exactly what I'm going for, but I do think I could gain some inspiration from her in terms of process for unconventional shapes and composition. Her compositions would be especially helpful for inspiration because my pieces rely so heavily on composition, and her compositions are generally effective. Her work is much more objective/less abstract than mine, though.

The piece to the left is a stained glass version of a willow tree - essentially a mobile that she created out of glass and brass. I don't see myself doing anything this large just because I don't really have time, but I do see this being really helpful when thinking about how to construct 3D pieces. I personally really like this piece, and I think it does a lot for the eye without actually being that complex in terms of which glass pieces are used.

I love this piece, too -- again, it's more objective than a lot of what I do, but it has a really effective diagonal line as well as great use of negative space. It does kind of scare me because I don't know how stable the mount is, but the soldering is extremely clean (much cleaner than mine) and the process video on her instagram could help me with more complex pieces.

The first in-class project has definitely been a bit of a learning curve, especially in terms of the logistics of doing stained glass in school. However, I feel like I'm making good progress with this first piece! I'm a bit behind in terms of timing, but all I have left to do is solder and I'm feeling good about the composition and glass choice. In the future, I'd like to streamline the tracing/cutting/grinding process by using a vinyl or sticker paper template to keep my cuts very precise, which will hopefully fix some of the need to fill blank spaces with solder that I've experienced in my last 2 pieces (I think this is because I use so many organic shapes that there are inevitably a few small inaccuracies that shift the whole piece and create gaps).
